How to Measure Car Retainer Clips

Replacement clips can look almost identical while using different mounting-hole sizes or stem lengths. Measuring the original fastener is more reliable than choosing by appearance alone.

1. Remove an undamaged original clip

Use a trim-removal tool when possible. A stretched, broken or deformed clip can produce inaccurate measurements.

2. Measure the mounting hole

Measure the opening in the vehicle panel with a caliper. Product listings normally describe this as the compatible hole size. Do not confuse it with the diameter of the clip head.

3. Measure the head and stem

Record the widest head diameter, the stem diameter and the usable stem length. For multi-level door-panel clips, measure each flange separately.

4. Identify the fastener style

Confirm whether the original is a push-type retainer, screw-type rivet, trim-panel clip or another design. Similar dimensions do not make different mechanisms interchangeable.

5. Compare the complete product page

Check the OEM reference, dimensions, vehicle application, installation position and package quantity. Vehicle make alone does not guarantee fitment because model year and trim can change the hardware.
